About PPIs

Proton Pump Inhibitors are used to treat issues such as acid reflux, or gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers and esophagus damage caused by acid reflux. PPIs work to block the enzyme in the stomach wall that produces acid and provide relief from the symptoms of gastric acid production.

Approximately 15 million adults in the U.S. use PPIs for treatment. The medication is available as a prescription and over-the-counter. Among the most popular PPI brands are Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid.

Common side effects associated with PPIs include headaches, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue and dizziness. Prolonged and long-term use of the medication has since been linked to serious medical conditions including chronic kidney disease, increased risk of heart attack, bone fractures, particularly in the elderly, and dementia.

History of Side Effects

A number of studies over the years have linked use of PPIs to the increased risk of developing serious medical conditions.

  • 2010: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a warning regarding the risk of bone fractures, particularly among the elderly, and the use of PPIs.
  • 2011: The FDA issued a notice linking long-term use of PPIs to hypomagnesaemia. The condition is a result of low magnesium levels and can lead to more serious health issues including neurological and muscular effects.
  • 2013: A study found a link between the use of PPIs and the risk of developing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
  • 2015: PLOS One, a science and medical journal, released results from two studies that found PPIs could lead to an increased risk of heart attack by up to 21 percent.
  • 2016: The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found extended use of PPIs might increase the risk of developing kidney issues such as chronic kidney disease by 20 to 50 percent.
