History of Onglyza Warnings
Since its introduction in 2010, Onglyza has been used as an effective treatment for type 2 diabetes. However, as early as 2011, information about possible serious side effects— including pancreatic cancer—were added to the medication’s warnings.
A number of 2013 studies, including one co-led by Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, found the use of the type 2 diabetes medication increased the risk of heart failure. There were also reported links between use of the medication and abnormal pre-cancerous cells in the pancreas.
In 2015, Onglyza reported $768 million in sales. That same year an FDA panel said the medication should carry a warning about an increased risk of heart failure.
