In the past two decades, some women have developed Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), a rare form of cancer, from breast implants. In fact, there was a class action settlement in which women received $4 billion, resulting in the ban of silicone breast implants. The FDA lifted the ban on manufacturing silicone for implants in 2006. Since that time, there has been a significant increase in known cases of Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a cancer that affects the immune system.
Allergan BIOCELL® textured breast implants and tissue expanders have been recalled in the U.S., after finding 24 more deaths and a six-fold increased risk of BIA-ALCL.
Allergan has stopped selling the following textured breast implants:
- Textured Natrelle Inspira Breast Implants
- Natrelle 410 Breast Implants
- BRST Breast Implants
- Allergan Tissue Expanders 133Plus
The symptoms of ALCL may include:
- Breast pain
- Swelling or lumps
- Asymmetry of the breast
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Tiredness
- Night sweats
- Weight loss
- Painless swelling in the armpit, neck or groin
- Enlarged lymph nodes
