Use

Abilify is used to treat certain mental disorders and works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain. It can be used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Tourette syndrome and irritability associated with Autism. The drug can also be used in conjunction with other anti-depressant medications to treat depression.

Typically, patients using Abilify experience a decrease in hallucinations, disorganized thinking and other psychotic symptoms, stabilized mood and a decrease in tics caused by Tourette syndrome.

Abilify is classified as an atypical antipsychotic. However, unlike most atypical antipsychotic medications that completely block the dopamine receptors in the brain, Abilify only partially blocks the receptors.

In 2015, American doctors prescribed Abilify to more than 1.6 million patients.

Side Effects

Use of Abilify has been connected to an increase in uncontrollable urges. Among these urges, the most common include compulsive gambling or shopping, binge eating and increased sexual urges. These compulsive behaviors stopped once patients went off the medication, suggesting a correlation between use of Abilify and the increase in urges.
